Expanding Safe Water Project to Kenya
Empowering Everyday Women is expanding The Safe Water Project to Kenya, focusing on communities in the country’s arid and semi-arid lands where drought, water scarcity, and limited infrastructure make reliable access to safe water a daily challenge.
Many of us rarely have to wonder where our next safe drink of water will come from. If the water from our tap needs filtering, treatment, or another precaution, we often have options.
For millions of people around the world, those options simply do not exist.
Empowering Everyday Women has long supported efforts to help remote and underserved communities gain access to safe water through The Safe Water Project. Now, we are expanding that work with a focused new initiative: Safe Water: Kenya.
After extensive research, prayer, counsel, and preparation, our team is directing new support toward communities in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands, commonly known as the ASALs.
These regions cover nearly 90 percent of Kenya and are especially vulnerable to recurring drought, unpredictable rainfall, and water scarcity.
In communities where dependable water sources are limited, families may travel significant distances simply to find enough water for drinking, cooking, washing, livestock, and other daily needs.
When water becomes scarce, the effects reach far beyond thirst.
Children and families face greater exposure to illness. Sanitation and hygiene become more difficult. Time that could be spent in school, at work, caring for family, or earning income may instead be spent searching for water.
For families whose livelihoods depend on agriculture or livestock, prolonged water shortages can threaten economic stability as well.
This is why safe water can change so much.
Our organization collaborates with a strong network of experienced partners that understand the communities they serve and are equipped to identify and implement appropriate water solutions.
Through this established model, donor support can help meet both immediate needs and support longer-term access to reliable water.
Depending upon the needs of a particular community, projects include boreholes and groundwater systems, solar-powered pumping systems, water storage and distribution, rainwater harvesting, sanitation and handwashing facilities, and community-based training designed to support the long-term care of water infrastructure.
Our goal is to help support solutions that continue serving families after the immediate crisis has passed.
Kenya’s ASAL communities live in some of the country’s most water-stressed environments.
Rainfall can be inconsistent, and during prolonged dry periods, existing water sources become depleted or increasingly difficult to reach. Families and livestock are sometimes forced to travel farther as drought conditions intensify.
These conditions place enormous pressure on households already navigating food insecurity, economic challenges, and limited infrastructure.
By concentrating our efforts in these communities, Safe Water: Kenya allows Empowering Everyday Women to direct resources toward areas where improved water access can strengthen many aspects of daily life.
Clean water gives families time that might otherwise be spent searching for water. And it gives children so water they can drink without fear or sickness.
We are grateful for every donor who has helped make this work possible and for every person who believes, as we do, that access to safe water can help transform the future of a family and strengthen an entire community.
There is meaningful work ahead, and we are excited about what we can accomplish together.
Water is life. Give the gift of water. Give the gift of life.
Give the Gift of Water.
Give the Gift of Life.
Your generosity can help bring safe, reliable water closer to children, families, and communities in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands. Together, we can support sustainable water solutions that protect health, strengthen communities, and create greater opportunity.
